Get a text from the Oregon DMV? It's a scam. What to know – Statesman Journal

The Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles is warning people who may have received a text or email from the DMV requesting payment that it is a scam and to ignore it.
The DMV announced June 9 the scam message claims the recipient has an outstanding traffic violation, citing a fake administrative code. It requests payment with a “Pay Now” link, and a threat of vehicle registration suspension, suspended driving privileges and credit score damage if payment isn’t made.
“These messages are not from Oregon DMV,” said Chris Crabb, Oregon DMV public information officer. “These are fake messages designed to get you to click on a link and provide personal information or send money.”
The DMV advises Oregonians to not click the link.
While the DMV may send text or email messages in some cases, they are only for transactions that have already been started and will never include links for personal information or payment.
“Oregon DMV will never ask you for personal information or payment through an unsolicited text, email or phone call,” Crabb said. “DMV transactions should only be completed online at dmv2u.oregon.gov or in person at a DMV office.”
Oregon DMV said that payments and proof of identity are always through DMV2U or by requesting copies of identity documents in person at a DMV office.
To protect against scams, the Oregon DMV advises people to never click on links, be cautious of suspicious text messages, delete the text and block the number. They should report scams and suspicious communication to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
If a link is clicked on or information is provided, the DMV advises Oregonians to secure their personal information and financial accounts and to dispute any unfamiliar charges with their bank.
