People now send 50% more WhatsApp messages than SMS – and the growth of this trend looks set to continue.
WhatsApp now has 700 million users who send over 30 billion messages a day. This figure compares with around 20 billion SMS sent per day, according to analysis by Benedict Evans.
The gap between WhatsApp and SMS messaging is widening – in almost every market, because sending SMS messages has been in decline since 2011.
To increase the space between them even more, WhatsApp is said to be adding a new feature to the app, namely video communication, as part of its growth plan.
WhatsApp is even bigger than most of its competitors, including Facebook Messenger and WeChat. These rival services tend to have more geographic coverage, and while Facebook Messenger is big in the US, WeChat and others are battling for market share in East Asia.
However, these comparisons do not include Apple iMessage – which is used automatically on the iPhone. This is because Apple keeps secret the usage statistics of its application, which is thought to have reached the figure of 400 million users, to date. (Telegraph)
