Fraudsters are attempting to deceive motorists in Iceland with text messages claiming they have outstanding parking charges, prompting Reykjavík City to clarify that the messages are fake.
The municipality has issued a public notice after reports of the fraudulent messages began circulating, stressing that its Parking Fund is not contacting motorists by text.

A warning displayed on Reykjavík City’s website states: “Please note: The City Parking Fund is not sending any SMS messages. These are phishing attempts. Do not respond or follow any links contained in these messages.”
The messages appear to imitate an official payment request in an effort to persuade recipients to visit a fraudulent website.
Rather than responding, people who receive one of the texts are advised to delete it without opening any links or providing personal information. The city has not released details about the scale of the scam but has highlighted the issue prominently on its website to alert the public.
Phishing campaigns commonly rely on trusted organisations to make fraudulent requests appear legitimate. Reykjavík City’s notice makes clear that any text message claiming to come from the city’s Parking Fund should be treated as a scam.
