HARTFORD, Conn. — Did you get a text recently saying that you have an “unresolved traffic citation” and must pay it “immediately?” The Connecticut Dept. of Motor Vehicles is warning that those texts are likely a scam.
The DMV is warning that fraudulent text messages have been circulating that falsely claim that recipients may face penalties if they don’t pay an outstanding ticket citation immediately.
The fake text message would say that the “unresolved traffic citation” would result in vehicle registration suspension, fees, and court action if a payment is not made in a timely manner. The text would also have a link to a suspicious payment site, the DMV said.
The DMV is emphasizing that these text messages are not real and that the DMV did not send those texts, as the DMV does not send payment demands through text messages.
The DMV asks those who get this scam text to refrain from clicking the link and refrain from replying. Delete the text message and report the scam text to the Federal Trade Commission.
