Microsoft SMS Organizer is going away, and many people are upset about it. The last update the app received was in 2024, and the shutdown is now imminent.
Users have begun receiving notifications from the SMS Organizer app, where it says “SMS Organizer is sunsetting…” You can view the entire message in the image below.
Various threads on Reddit and posts on X show the notification communicating the closure of the app. However, these notifications do not mention the exact date of shutdown, and there’s no way of accurately assuming that. It’s recommended to migrate your data as soon as possible and move to another app before you stop receiving SMS messages entirely.
Microsoft SMS Organizer was globally released in 2019; it was in beta for a while in India before that. The reception was positive at the time of launch, and many people still use it to this day, because it’s a free app that works really well.
Understandably, reactions were negative. A lot of people call this shutdown unfortunate, and that it doesn’t make any sense to kill off something that worked so well. While a few people assume a lack of popularity as a reason, the app has over 1 million downloads on the Play Store, which appears sufficiently high.
According to other comments, the app allegedly had several long-standing bugs, such as issues with delivering notifications. As a result, many users may have migrated to other popular apps such as Google Messages.
While the enthusiasts would appreciate it if Microsoft open-sourced the project and let the community maintain it, I wouldn’t hold my breath.
Most people are now looking for alternatives once the app shuts down. You can check out Google Messages, but it’s not as good at filtering out advertisements and spam. Some have suggested ZenSMS, MezoSMS, etc. However, we haven’t individually tested out these apps; it shouldn’t be considered as an endorsement from us. It’s always suggested to research the data privacy policies when installing such third-party tools.
In 2026, we’ve also seen Microsoft close down the Microsoft Lens app, and the SMS Organizer will soon join the list.
Finally, it’s worth noting that Microsoft hasn’t officially issued a statement on this on their blog or socials. For now, the only way the company is communicating this closure is via notifications sent to users.
In other Microsoft news, the company is planning to add customization/remapping to the Copilot key soon. You can read about that here.
