Greece has begun sending the first SMS messages to participants in a new free program aimed at tackling adult obesity and reducing cardiovascular risk. The initiative will gradually reach a total of 30,000 eligible individuals.
The program offers comprehensive care, including a free medical consultation at participating public health facilities, access to innovative obesity treatments, personalized nutritional counseling, and follow-up visits to monitor progress. Its goal is to promote gradual weight loss, encourage healthy habits, and support long-term weight management.
Today and tomorrow (December 23–24), 13,000 SMS invitations will be sent to program participants. A second batch of 17,000 messages will follow on Sunday and Monday (December 29–30).
Eligibility is limited to adults with severe obesity—those with a body mass index (BMI) over 40, or a BMI between 37 and 40 accompanied by related health conditions. Participants with activated electronic prescriptions will receive their referral electronically, while others can schedule their visit using their social security number (AMKA) at no cost.
