Fulton County officials warn of text message scam – Atlanta News First

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Fulton County officials are warning about fraudulent text messages requesting immediate payments for fake toll violations.
Residents of Fulton County and the City of Atlanta are receiving text messages with a screenshot of a fabricated notice titled “Notice of Traffic Citation Hearing – Toll Violation,” according to the Office of the Fulton County Solicitor General.
This notice names the fictitious “Judge John Smith,” contains a fake case number and has a bogus QR-code for payment.
The solicitor general’s office said it does not prosecute toll violations. It also sends notices to appear in court through the mail, not through text messages.
The office urges residents not to scan any QR codes or submit payment through unsolicited text messages and to contact the office directly to verify any court matters. The office can be reached at (404) 612-4802 or [email protected].
“I treat these attempts to take the hard-earned money of the citizens of Fulton County very seriously,” Solicitor General Keith Gammage said in a statement. “I want the public to know that the Office of the Fulton County Solicitor – General will never send a Notice to Appear in Court via text message. I implore the community to remain vigilant and to verify their case with our Office prior to making any payments because, these scams are more pervasive and becoming harder to detect.”
