The Eurovision 2023 grand final is set to get underway in a very short amount of time at the Liverpool M&S Bank Arena in the UK, and amongst those competing for votes is Austria’s entry Teya & Salena.
Already, the female duo has been garnering lots of attention with their song, Who The Hell Is Edgar? which they performed at the second live semi-final.
The song’s meaning may seem pretty obvious – they are asking to learn more about American poet and writer Edgar Allan Poe, but there’s a little more to it than that.
The song is actually a comment on their experiences as women in the music industry.
Listeners will hear them say they’re becoming possessed by the spirit of Edgar, who ghostwrites their song from the grave.
Clever lyrics in the pop track include references to how women don’t get enough credit for their hard work and expertise.
The catchy chorus is quite easy to follow along with: ‘Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe,
Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Edgar Allan, Who the hell is Edgar?’
While the verses include lines: ‘Zero, dot, zero, zero, three. Give me two years, and your dinner will be free.’
0.003 is said to refer to the amount of money given to artists by Spotify per song play.
It then adds: ‘Gas station champagne is on me. Edgar cannot pay rent for me.’
Teodora Špirić, 23, and Selina-Maria Edbauer, 25, met at Austrian talent show Starmania 21, and bonded over their love of Eurovision.
They both previously came close to representing Eurovision as individuals, but joining forces did the trick.

They pair are the 10th most likely to be victorious according to the latest betting odds, just behind Mae Muller in 9th place.
Teya & Salena currently have a 1% chance, with all odds according to Eurovision World.
The Eurovision Song Contest grand final is on Saturday May 13 on BBC One at 8pm.
