Android 14 Features: Mishaal Rahman, an Android researcher, posted via his X (formerly Twitter) account that the Google Messages app could get support for satellite connectivity to send SOS alerts. The Android expert adds that the tech giant has already highlighted that it is working on satellite support for the upcoming OS.
While we have been eagerly waiting for the release of Android 14, rumours and leaks repeatedly hint at new features of the operating system. In the latest move, Mishaal Rahman, an Android researcher, posted via his X (formerly Twitter) account that the Google Messages app could get support for satellite connectivity to send SOS alerts.
According to Rahman (who received a tip on the feature from Neïl Rahmouni), while the technology is already helping iPhone users across the globe, it could now make way on Android-powered phones as the emergency SOS activity is a placeholder in the app. Hence, it could debut in the future version.

“Looks like Google Messages is indeed preparing to add support for Satellite Connectivity. They’ve added UIs for conversations and SOS messages using satellite connection,” @neil_rahmouni
posted on X.
The Android expert adds that the tech giant has already highlighted that it is working on satellite support for the upcoming OS. Google Messages is the default app in smartphones of diverse brands, and this would help avoid the need to keep a separate app for these forms of communication.

Rahman added that while satellite connection application programming interfaces (APIs) were available in Android 14, they were marked as hidden and were not available to developers. “There’s going to be a satellite service “demo mode”. Supported datagrams include SOS messages and location sharing,” he said in a previous post. The feature will depend on the “modem hardware” and will not be supported on all Android 14 running devices.
As for more updates on Android 14, the new OS is tipped to have a battery health check feature like iPhones to monitor battery stats. Plus, it will also have more privacy-centric features.
