This is the most common fix. MMS, which includes photos, videos, and group texts with non-iPhone users, requires cellular data. Even if you’re on Wi-Fi, your phone needs mobile data enabled to send them. Open Settings > Cellular and scroll down to find the Messages toggle. Make sure it’s switched on.
While you’re there, check that your overall cellular data is enabled at the top of that screen. If you see “SMS” as the only option when you try to send, that’s a dead giveaway your phone is trying to send it as a text-only message because the MMS pathway isn’t active.
There’s a master switch for MMS buried in your Messages settings. Sometimes an iOS update or a carrier settings update can flip it off. To check, go to Settings > Messages.
Scroll down to the “SMS/MMS” section. You need to ensure MMS Messaging is turned on. If it’s off, your iPhone 15 will not send or receive any multimedia messages through the standard cellular network.
iMessage and SMS/MMS work together on your iPhone. If iMessage gets confused, it can sometimes block the regular MMS pathway. A quick reset can clear this up. Go to Settings > Messages and turn the iMessage switch off.
Wait about thirty seconds, then turn it back on. You might see an “Activating…” message. Try sending your photo again after it reactivates. I’ve seen this simple step resolve more MMS issues than you’d think.
Your carrier occasionally sends small updates that fine-tune network connectivity, including for MMS. These install automatically, but sometimes they get stuck. To manually check, make sure you’re connected to Wi-Fi or have a strong cellular signal.
Then, go to Settings > General > About. If an update is available, a prompt will appear. This process only takes a moment and doesn’t require a restart.
A soft reset can clear out temporary glitches in the modem or messaging services. The method changed with the iPhone 15’s design. Quickly press and release the Volume Up button, then quickly press and release the Volume Down button.
Immediately press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo appear, then let go. This doesn’t delete any data. Once it reboots, try sending your MMS again.
This is a more thorough step if the simpler ones haven’t worked. It will erase all your saved Wi-Fi passwords, Bluetooth pairings, and cellular network preferences, but it often fixes persistent MMS and data issues.
Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone. Tap Reset and then choose Reset Network Settings. You’ll need to enter your passcode and confirm. Your iPhone 15 will restart, and you’ll have to reconnect to Wi-Fi networks and re-pair Bluetooth devices.
Apple releases iOS updates that include bug fixes for connectivity and messaging problems. It’s worth making sure you’re on the latest version of iOS. Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
If an update is available, I’d recommend installing it. It’s a good practice to plug your iPhone 15 into power using its USB-C port and connect to Wi-Fi before starting the update.
Sometimes the issue isn’t your phone, but your account or signal. Make sure your cellular plan includes MMS messaging, as some very basic or legacy plans might not. Also, check your signal strength.
MMS typically needs a stronger, more stable connection than a regular text. If you’re in a basement or a rural area with a single bar, try moving to a location with better reception. Sending a photo requires more data bandwidth than a simple “OK.”
If you’ve tried all these steps and MMS still won’t send from your iPhone 15, the next step would be to contact your wireless carrier. They can check your line provisioning on their end and ensure there are no account-level blocks on multimedia messaging.
