Hyderabad: Planning to turn your latest photo into a 1980s-style retro image? Be careful before downloading any app or APK promising to do it.
Hyderabad Cyber Crimes unit officials have warned that fraudsters are exploiting the trend to circulate fake AI photo-editing apps that may steal sensitive data, including SMS, OTPs, contacts and files, and could put users’ banking and UPI credentials at risk.
Fake apps disguised as retro photo editors
According to Hyderabad Cyber Crimes officials, fraudsters may circulate WhatsApp messages, social media links, SMS messages or APK files promising to transform present-day photographs into 1980s-style or vintage images.
These files may be disguised as AI photo editors, vintage-camera applications or photo-generation tools. The attractive promise of creating a retro photograph could prompt users to download and install an application without verifying its source.
Malicious APKs can access sensitive data
Officials cautioned that the risk begins when users install such malicious APK files and grant them permissions.
A fraudulent application may attempt to access SMS messages, OTPs, contacts, photographs, files and other sensitive information on the device.
Such access could potentially be misused to obtain banking or UPI-related information and facilitate unauthorised financial transactions.
Don’t trust unknown photo-editing apps
The Cyber Crimes unit advised users to be particularly cautious about applications promoted through unverified links or messaging platforms.
An app claiming to offer a simple photo transformation should not require access to information unrelated to its actual function. Users should check the permissions requested before installing any application.
Hyderabad Cyber Crimes officials issue safety tips
To stay safe from such scams, officials advised users to:
– Never install APK files received through WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS, or unknown links.
– Do not trust apps promising “1980s photo”, “retro AI photo” or similar transformations from unknown sources.
– Download apps only from official app stores and trusted developers.
– Check the permissions requested by an application before installing it.
– Never share OTP, UPI PIN, ATM PIN, CVV or banking passwords with anyone.
What to do if money is lost
Hyderabad Cyber Crimes officials advised people who notice unauthorised financial activity to act immediately.
Victims can call the 1930 cybercrime helpline and report the incident through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal at cybercrime.gov.in.
A viral photo is not worth risking your bank account
The Cyber Crimes unit urged users to exercise caution before clicking on links or installing applications promising trendy photo transformations.
Think before you click. Verify before you install. A trending photo should never cost you your bank account, officials said.
