The telco, in partnership with Cellusys, rolls out advanced network-level protection, safeguarding customers from fraud across its 4G and 5G networks

KUALA LUMPUR – U Mobile Sdn Bhd has successfully blocked over 265 million scam calls and fraudulent SMS messages across its 4G and 5G networks since introducing its comprehensive network-level scam protection in December 2025.
In a joint statement, U Mobile and Cellusys confirmed that the initiative, powered by Cellusys’ advanced firewall technology, enables the telecommunications company to screen all inbound calls and messages at the network level. This proactive approach ensures that suspicious communications are prevented from reaching customers’ devices.
“The solution has shielded U Mobile customers from various scams, including calls impersonating authorities and institutions, SMS phishing (smishing) attacks, spoofed caller identities, and large-scale criminal campaigns targeting Malaysians,” the companies stated.
U Mobile’s Chief Technology Officer, Woon Ooi Yuen, highlighted that the integration of this advanced protection system reaffirms the company’s commitment to safeguarding customers from fraudulent activities.
“We will continue enhancing our network technology to better protect customers across voice, messaging, and data services. As we expand our nationwide 5G network, security will remain a core priority, as trusted connectivity is crucial for a resilient digital economy,” he said.
Brendan Cleary, CEO of Cellusys, praised U Mobile’s initiative, calling it a new benchmark for scam prevention in Malaysia and the wider region.
“This deployment demonstrates the tangible benefits of using proven, real-world defences, rather than waiting for future developments,” he added.
The joint statement also referenced findings from the Global Anti-Scam Alliance, which revealed that 73% of Malaysians have reported receiving scam calls or fraudulent SMS, one of the highest rates in Southeast Asia. Criminal groups have increasingly targeted households, senior citizens, and vulnerable individuals.
In November, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) was instructed to investigate a telecommunication company accused of charging RM10 to users for anti-scam protection services.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil stated that the investigation would aim to clarify whether the charges were justified.
“I have not reviewed the report yet, but I will ask MCMC to identify the telecom service provider in question. This is to obtain an explanation and assess whether the charges are reasonable. We want to understand what is meant by the service and the charges,” he said at a press conference following a Cabinet meeting.
Previously, media reports highlighted criticism of telecom companies allegedly imposing a RM10 monthly fee for scam protection services. Consumer associations and computer experts argued that customer security should be a fundamental responsibility of service providers, not a new profit source.
Market observers also expressed concern, suggesting that turning digital security into a premium product contradicts the social responsibility of telecom companies, which benefit from public trust and the integrity of their networks.
“Basic anti-fraud protection should be a standard feature, not an additional cost to users,” said one market observer. – December 29, 2025
