NEWS… BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT
Spoilers for Season 4 of Sex Education ahead.
The Sex Education gang have a lot on their plates in the final outing and one character’s journey held a powerful meaning in their intimate scene.
The Netflix drama might be over but season 4 certainly isn’t short on drama, with the students having plenty to contend with.
A new college means new people and new challenges, not to mention the arrival of Jean Milburn’s baby, Maeve Wiley (Emma Mackey) studying overseas, fractured friendships, turbulent romances and, of course, mishaps in the bedroom.
As for Eric Effiong (Ncuti Gatwa) he is truly in his element as he shines with IT group The Coven aka the new school’s equivalent to Moordale’s Untouchables, but it’s his spiritual journey that will have fans engaged from start to finish.
While the fashionista, who is of Nigerian and Ghanian descent, seems to have moved on from his breakup with Adam Groff (Connor Swindells) he finds himself battling with his Christian faith as a proud gay man.
And in episode three it reaches a climax (literally, it is Sex Education after all) after a fellow churchgoer, who appears to still be in the closet, gets to know Eric better during a queer party.
After a couple of drinks, and Eric and the mystery new flame have some fun in the toilet and intimacy coordinator David Thackeray revealed the steamy act represented Eric’s growth following years of shame.
When asked about Eric’s progression, David agreed that the raunchy scene is meant to be seen as liberating more than anything else.
He told us: ‘The intimate scene in the toilet booth and the amazing height that he finds himself … Ncuti is just great on set.’

Eric isn’t the only person that has some fun this season, as fans will see Otis Milburn (Asa Butterfield) and Maeve have one night of passion after years of will they/won’t they.

After Maeve returned to back home under tragic circumstances, it looks like the pair might stay together. However Otis’ mum Jean (Gillian Anderson) reminds Maeve of her potential, and she decides to head back to America to complete her writing fellowship.
While fans will have mixed feelings about the ending, David recalled the challenges in filming the highly anticipated love scene – which he also described as the season ‘highlight.’
‘I think when reading those scenes it was just pressure,’ he said.
‘It was a lot because you want to make sure you get it right. What I’ve seen in the edit is just brilliant. Working that scene and being a part of that for the characters… it was great to end that journey.’
