Lansing, Mich. (WNEM) — Attorney General Dana Nessel warns Mid-Michigan communities of scam text messages posing as post-storm cleanup services.
With the intense storms that have moved across Michigan, Nessel is reminding residents that post-storm cleanup services can be found on the MIREADY website. Any text messages from an unknown number claiming to be a post-storm cleanup service are scams and should be ignored.
The state of Michigan has information on what to do after a severe storm. A new website has been launched for residents to receive up-to-date information on impacted dams and statewide flooding. Governor Whitmer has also extended activation of the state Emergency Operation Center as water levels continue to rise, threatening dams and increasing the possibility of flooding.
“As communities across Michigan face flood warnings and watches, residents must be prepared,” Nessel said. “If you live near a flood zone, monitor official updates and sign up for local alerts. Unfortunately, severe weather and flooding often bring out bad actors looking to profit from impacted residents. Before making any repairs, remember to do your homework and know your rights.”
No matter what disaster may take place, affected homeowners want to repair the damage right away. This can reduce caution, leading responsible consumers to make the wrong decisions.
