A new batch of scam text messages impersonating Amazon is circulating, claiming a recall on items and offering refunds for products that were never purchased.
This scam first exploded last summer, and now a new batch of these messages is generating questions from viewers who have sent them to consumer investigator Brian Roche.
The scam involves a text message alleging Amazon is recalling an item due to “quality and safety” issues, urging recipients to stop using the item immediately and request a refund.
The message provides an order number but does not tell you what the item is. It includes a link to click on, which, if clicked, will likely ask for bank or credit card information to receive the refund.
Instead, the scammers take the money. This link, by the way, is already dead or disconnected.
Amazon customers can protect themselves by logging into their accounts and verifying the order number provided in the text message.
If you don’t have an Amazon account, this is clearly a scam.
