AUSTIN, Texas — The state’s power grid operator, ERCOT, is reminding Texans it does not text people directly to share information about power grid conditions.
Some Texans have been getting text messages claiming to be from ERCOT, saying there will be rolling power outages starting Saturday night. Those texts are part of a scam and not real.
A spokesperson for the grid operator told KVUE ERCOT will communicate grid conditions through its official communication channels, like its website, and through the “TXANS” notification system.
ERCOT said grid conditions are expected to remain normal as a winter storm hits Texas this weekend, but a Weather Watch has been issued from Saturday through Tuesday due to higher electricity demand. ERCOT said it will continue to monitor conditions.
