TRAFFIC summonses and parking fines have long been a routine part of driving, but receiving an unexpected text message about an unpaid compound can easily trigger anxiety and prompt rushed reactions.
Is it true that Cybercriminals are actively exploiting this through phishing scams designed to look like official government notifications?
Verdict:
TRUE
The Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department has issued a formal warning to the public regarding fraudulent SMS messages claiming to involve electronic parking fines and traffic summonses.
These deceptive texts are part of a wider impersonation syndicate seeking to steal personal and financial data.
According to police, the modus operandi involves sending arbitrary text messages with malicious links attached, falsely warning recipients that they face immediate penalties or legal action if they fail to settle outstanding dues.
Users who click these links are redirected to fake web portals engineered to mimic official payment platforms, where they are tricked into handing over sensitive personal information, credit card numbers, and online banking credentials.
Authorities have strongly reminded the public never to respond to suspicious text messages, click unverified links, or disclose confidential banking details to unknown parties.
Motorists are advised to check their traffic summons status exclusively through legitimate channels, such as the official MyBayar PDRM portal, and to remain cautious against digital fraud regardless of how convincing a message might appear.
