Senders impersonate a bank or the Post Office
The Police Directorate has warned citizens about the emergence of various forms of electronic fraud (phishing/phishing attacks) that have been observed on the territory of Montenegro in the previous period.
In order to timely inform the public and prevent financial and material damage, the Police Directorate warns citizens about the occurrence of various forms of electronic fraud (phishing/phishing attacks) that have been observed in the territory of Montenegro in the previous period.
“A mass sending of SMS messages and messages via communication applications (Viber) has been registered, in which the senders falsely present themselves as a commercial bank in Montenegro or as ‘Montenegro Post’. The content of these messages contains malicious links for alleged confirmation, update or payment, the real aim of which is to mislead citizens and induce them to reveal their personal and financial data, including usernames, passwords and bank card data,” the statement reads.
The police are specifically warning that citizens are being sent fake SMS messages stating that the shipment cannot be delivered due to an incomplete address, with an invitation to confirm or change personal data via a suspicious link. They emphasize that this is a scam, and that the Montenegrin Post does not communicate with users in this way, nor does it request the entry of sensitive data via suspicious internet links.
The Police Directorate urges citizens not to open suspicious links and not to download unknown files, not to enter or share their personal, banking and other sensitive data via SMS messages, email or communication applications, and to ignore and delete messages they were not expecting, without responding to them.
They remind that this is not the first time that the name and visual identity of banks and the Post Office have been misused in attempts to defraud citizens, and they call on the public to be more cautious and behave responsibly in the digital space.
To check information regarding postal items, citizens can contact the call center of the Post of Montenegro at 19895.
“The Police Directorate will continue to implement preventive and repressive measures and actions within its jurisdiction in the coming period, with the aim of protecting citizens, their property and security in the digital environment,” the statement reads.
