KATHMANDU, Jan 14: Police arrested Nirdesh Sedhai for allegedly sending mass SMS messages urging people to join a monarchist protest, according to the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office.
Police said Sedhai sent messages to a large number of recipients at the same time to mobilize citizens for the royalist demonstration.
Police said that the messages were reportedly sent to around 5 million people.
Authorities said Sedhai used Nepal Telecom’s gateway under the name “AT Alert” to dispatch the messages. He allegedly signed agreements with telecom companies to carry out the mass messaging. Sedhai reportedly claimed he spent around Rs 10 million using two of the three companies involved.
