Police and HKMA warn public about phishing SMS scams – Dimsum Daily

16th April 2025 – (Hong Kong) The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) and the police have issued a warning today, 16th April, urging the public to stay alert to phishing SMS messages falsely claiming to be from the Anti-Deception Coordination Centre (ADCC) and the HKMA. These fraudulent messages claim to help recipients recover frozen assets or payments made to scammers. They direct people to contact fake law firms and request sensitive information such as bank account details or money transfers to specific bank accounts.
Authorities emphasized that neither the police nor the HKMA will contact individuals regarding personal financial matters or authorize law firms to aid in recovering fraud-related losses. Members of the public are advised to remain cautious and not trust unsolicited messages, social media pages, or advertisements offering assistance in recovering money lost to scams.
The public is encouraged to verify the background and professional qualifications of any service providers before seeking help. For information about solicitors, individuals can consult the official website of The Law Society of Hong Kong at www.hklawsoc.org.hk.
The ADCC’s official “Registered SMS Sender ID” is “#ADCC18222”. Legitimate SMS messages from the ADCC do not include hyperlinks and only provide the “Anti-Scam Helpline 18222.” Anyone with questions is advised to contact the 24-hour hotline at “Anti-Scam Helpline 18222.”
