COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles is warning residents to beware of a text message scam falsely claiming to be from the BMV and demanding payment for traffic violations.
According to the BMV, Ohioans have reported receiving text messages saying they have an outstanding traffic ticket and must pay immediately to avoid having their driver’s license suspended.
The messages include links and are part of a phishing scam intended to steal personal and financial information, the BMV said.
“If you receive this text, do not fall for this scam,” said Ohio BMV Registrar Charlie Norman. “Do not click any links and delete the text. Ohio BMV will never send you a text demanding payment or requesting your personal information.”
“We saw a similar scam, maybe a month or so ago,” Norman added. “This was also nationwide and had to do with unpaid toll fees.”

“All of these scam texts sort of follow the same pattern,” he said. “There’s a threatening tone. There’s an abnormal sense of urgency to take action… Often, there’s spelling errors, grammatical errors.”
If you receive any potential scam texts, Norman recommends immediately deleting the text.
Ohioans can report scam attempts to the Federal Trade Commission by visiting reportfraud.ftc.gov.
If you believe you have been a victim of a scam, contact your local law enforcement agency.
