KYTC warns of text message scam posing as state agency – KFVS12

FRANKFORT, Ky. (KFVS) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is warning drivers about a fake text message impersonating the state agency.
KYTC said the text message states the receiver has unpaid traffic tickets and their “driving privileges” will be suspended if payment is not sent immediately.
The message includes a suspicious link that KYTC said is similar to Kentucky government website addresses.
KYTC said this is a scam to get personal information and that their agency does not collect traffic ticket fees or notify customers of violations using text messages.
Below is a photo of what the fake text message looks like.
The state agency also does not go by ‘KDOT’ or ‘DMV.’
KYTC states they are working to have the fake websites taken down.
Anyone receiving the text message is urged not to click on the link and to report it to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), the Federal Trade Commission or the Kentucky Office of the Attorney General.
