The Judiciary Police (PJ) warned yesterday that scammers have been sending phishing text messages to the public under the guise of Macau banks, with the aim of stealing personal and credit card information.
According to a PJ statement, scammers posing as a Macau bank have been sending SMS messages falsely claiming that recipients are eligible for a “full refund of the 1,050 pataca annual fee paid in 2025”. This is an attempt to lure victims into clicking a link provided in the message to apply for the refund. Scammers then steal the personal and credit card details entered on the fraudulent website to carry out unauthorised, large-sum transactions.
The Judiciary Police remind the public that banks in Macau will never send text messages containing links. Regardless of who the sender appears to be, do not click on any links attached to text messages without first verifying their authenticity. In any situation where a credit card is used for online transactions, always carefully check the merchant details and the transaction amount to prevent scammers from taking advantage.
If residents have any doubts, they should use the PJ’s Anti-Fraud Programme to check the fraud risk level, or call the Judiciary Police anti-fraud hotline on 8800 7777 or the emergency hotline on 993 for assistance.
