The Hindu festival of Diwali is celebrated with great fervour across the country. Indeed, this festival of light is celebrated not just in India but across the world by millions of people. Diwali, or Deepavali, is called the festival of lights because of the tradition of lighting lamps or diyas associated with the festival. In Hindu mythology, it is believed that when Lord Ram returned to Ayodhya with Sita and Lakshman after his 14-year exile, the people of Ayodhya lit diyas outside their homes to welcome him back.
The tradition of lighting lamps to dispel the darkness also has a symbolic connotation of the victory of good over evil, of light over darkness. Diwali is celebrated on Amavasya in the Kartik month of the Hindu lunisolar calendar. Lighting lamps on this night is also believed to be a way to welcome Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth, into the homes of devotees.
This year, Diwali will be celebrated on November 12. Here are some Happy Diwali wishes, greetings, messages, pics and images you can share with your loved ones on the festival of light:
May the festival of lights bring you happiness galore. Happy Diwali to you and your loved ones.
Darkness recedes as candles ignite,
A symphony of colours, a festival’s delight

The light of diyas
