Google Messages RCS blank texts on Tesla Intel cars appear to be getting fixed – PiunikaWeb

For months, some Tesla owners using Google Pixel phones have dealt with a frustrating issue where incoming texts showed up as blank bubbles on the car’s infotainment screen. The notification would appear, the car would recognize that a message had arrived, and in some cases drivers could even send a reply, but the actual message content was just missing.
Now, based on fresh user reports, that long-running Google Messages and Tesla bug finally appears to be getting fixed for at least some affected users.
What made this issue especially annoying is that it wasn’t a simple case of texting being broken altogether. On affected cars, SMS messages often continued to work normally, while RCS messages coming through Google Messages showed up blank. That pointed to a more specific compatibility problem rather than a total failure of Bluetooth messaging.
From some of the reports I reviewed, the issue seemed to hit a very particular combination of hardware and software. Most complaints came from Tesla owners with older Intel-based infotainment systems, including 2017 to 2020 Model S, Model X, and Model 3 vehicles, paired with Google Pixel phones like the Pixel 6, Pixel 7, Pixel 8, Pixel 9a, and even the Pixel 10 Pro XL.
One owner of a 2019 Model 3 Long Range said the problem began after a Tesla update just before the holiday release, with blank messages appearing on a Pixel 7 Pro. Another owner with a 2017 Model S and MCU2 upgrade said texting had worked fine for years until new messages suddenly started showing up empty on the Tesla screen despite appearing normally on the phone.
That pattern repeated across Tesla Motors Club, Reddit, and Google’s own Messages support forums. Several users also said the bug seemed to begin shortly after the December 2025 Pixel or Android update, which immediately shifted suspicion toward Google Messages, Android’s RCS implementation, or the Bluetooth messaging stack.
At the same time, there was another clue that kept coming up in user reports: Tesla’s newer AMD-based vehicles seemed largely unaffected.
One owner said blank RCS messages showed up on an Intel-based Model 3, while the same phone worked properly in their wife’s AMD-based Model Y. Another said their 2020 Model X with Intel hardware failed to display texts, while a newer 2024 Model Y with AMD hardware handled them just fine. That distinction matters because it suggests the problem was not simply Tesla + Android, but more likely a compatibility issue involving Google Messages RCS and Tesla’s Intel-based infotainment systems.
For a while, the only workaround was to disable RCS entirely in Google Messages. That restored normal text display for some owners, but it also meant giving up typing indicators, higher-quality media handling, read receipts, and modern group chat support. In other words, it worked, but in the same way ripping out a smart bulb and using a candle technically solves a lighting issue.
Now the good news.
A few fresh reports from affected Tesla owners suggest the blank-message issue has started disappearing. One user with a 2019 Model S running Tesla software version 2026.2.6 said the problem suddenly fixed itself without a new Tesla firmware update. They noted that their Tesla Android app was on version 4.54.5-4133. Another owner reported that text messages were working again on a 2020 Model 3 Long Range with Android 16, Tesla app version 4.54.5-4133, and Google Messages version 20260306_02_RC03. Yet another user confirmed things were back to normal after a reboot.
What makes these reports notable is that the fix does not appear tied to a new vehicle software release. In at least some cases, the car remained on the same Tesla firmware build while the issue cleared up anyway. That strongly suggests the resolution may have arrived through recent updates to the Tesla mobile app, Google Messages, or even a server-side change that did not require a full OTA vehicle patch.
Right now, it is still too early to say that the bug has been fully resolved for everyone. The number of fix confirmations is still limited, and neither Google nor Tesla appears to have publicly acknowledged the issue or its resolution. But after months of complaints stretching back to the December 2025 update window, these new reports are the clearest sign yet that something has changed.
So if you were affected by the Google Messages RCS blank text bug in your Tesla, especially on an Intel-based Model S, Model X, or Model 3, it may be worth checking that both the Tesla app and Google Messages app are fully updated, then rebooting the phone and the car. That combination now appears to be enough to get message content showing properly again for at least some users.

Tech has been my playground for over a decade. While the Android journey began early, it truly took flight with the revolutionary Lollipop update. Since then, it’s been a parade of Android devices (with a sprinkle of iOS), culminating in a mostly happy marriage with Google’s smart home ecosystem. Expect insightful articles and explorations of the ever-evolving world of Android and Google products coupled with occasional rants on the Nest smart home ecosystem.
