It must be working, because it’s still happening.
Text messages are still popping up telling people they owe money because of E-ZPass. Don’t fall for it.
The scam involves people getting a text message that tells them they owe money on their account.
One message received in New Jersey says “You have an outstanding toll. Your toll account balance is outstanding. If you fail to pay, you will face penalties or legal action.”
It then offers a link telling you to click for further details. You don’t want to click on the link.
It also says “Final Reminder: Toll Payment Deadline Approaching Your outstanding tolls are due by April 8, 2025. Failure to pay may result in: vehicle registration suspension financial penalties Damaged credit score.” It then lists a link and says “Please pay now to avoid these consequences. Thank you!”
If you get a text message from a number saying it’s E-ZPass, do not click on the link. Often, the links will install malware on your device. And certainly don’t send money.
If you have E-ZPass, the best thing to do is to contact them on their website, or to log in to your account.
If you get a text saying you owe money, it’s a scam. If you think it might be accurate, don’t reply to the text. Log into your account and check there. Never text sensitive information on a cold text. While these texts look real, they aren’t. Also, check for misspellings, grammar and punctuation mistakes. The scammers are clever, but apparently not great with spelling.
