BBB: Warning about fake shipping text messages – WBRC

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – A new warning from the Better Business Bureau about fake shipping text messages.
If you get one of these text messages, it’s likely a scam and you should avoid clicking the link.
The BBB says these messages look like they are from major shipping companies like USPS or FedEx and are becoming more frequent.
They claim your shipments are being delayed and you have to click a link to fix it.
But if you click the link, malware could be downloaded onto your device, or the scammer could steal your personal information like your address or credit card number.
Another trend experts are seeing are text messages from delivery drivers who claim they need more information to deliver your package or that they tried, were unsuccessful, and have to charge you a small fee.
This is also fake.
“If you get that link and you’re concerned about something you did order, you need to go back to the merchant site or the e-mail you got from the merchant with your confirmation number. That usually also gives you an option to track the package. Hit that to track the package or contact the merchant with your confirmation number and say I’d like to know has this shipped,” said Carl Bates with the BBB.
Major shipping companies won’t use text messages as a way to contact you about your packages, those are usually done via email from the company you bought the item from.
