On Wednesday, September 30, 2026 (local time), Google announced the official rollout of a new long-press feature for “Google Messages,” the SMS, MMS, and RCS client app for Android.
With the new long-press experience in the Android “Google Messages” app, the menu that appears when you long-press a message has been revamped, displaying an overlay-style menu directly above the selected message. While previous long-press actions were displayed in a bar at the top of the screen, actions like “Reply,” “Forward,” “Copy,” “Star,” and “Delete” can now be used directly from this new overlay menu.
Alongside the new long-press experience, the Android “Google Messages” app now also supports partial text selection within messages. Partial text selection is a feature that has been heavily requested by users.
Once you long-press a sent or received message to bring up the overlay menu, you can now partially select specific parts of that message as needed. When using partial selection, options such as “Copy,” “Translate,” and “Select all” become available.
