DAR ES SALAAM: AIRTEL Tanzania has launched an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based spam alert service aimed at protecting customers from mobile fraud and scams, in a major move to strengthen the fight against fraudulent activities in the country.
Dubbed Airtel Spam Alert – Kataa Matapeli, the service automatically provides real-time alerts to both smartphone and feature phone users for suspected spam SMS messages, without the need for additional applications or activation steps.
Tanzania becomes the latest country to benefit from the technology after successful rollouts in Nigeria and Uganda.
Speaking during the launch ceremony on Monday in Dar es Salaam, Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Jerry Silaa,commended Airtel Tanzania for the innovation, noting that the service complements government efforts under the #Sitapeliki campaign, which seeks to raise public awareness and safeguard citizens from mobile fraudsters.

“Airtel’s Spam Alert service, which leverages AI to detect online fraud, is a major boost to our national campaign to ensure the safety of our citizens and protect them from scam attempts,” Mr Silaa said.
On his part, Airtel Tanzania Managing Director, Mr Charles Kamoto, said the initiative demonstrates the company’s commitment to empowering customers by providing them with tools to detect and avoid fraud.
“This is not just a technology launch, it is a declaration that Airtel Tanzania is your digital guardian. We are determined to ensure that our customers can enjoy digital services with confidence,” he said.
He urged stakeholders to continue supporting anti-fraud initiatives across the country.
