With all the deterioration of our political and social environment as we careen into a fascist necropolis, this diary is rather superfluous. But there has recently been a large increase, a veritable barrage, in the amount of fundraising messages I receive. After the Mr. Kos diary warning of scam PACs and organizations that basically “take the money and run” without disbursing to any organization, I routinely just delete them without opening, and often reply with “stop” unless the message is from an organization I am familiar with. Oft times, I can’t easily ascertain what organization is sending the message. Unfortunately, I can’t read the links in the SMS messages as Apple, in a fit of design elegance, display them in the hardest to see color, an incandescent blue. I have to click on them to see where they lead, usually to an ACT BLUE page. But considering the dozens I receive every day, I don’t feel like I want to take the time or the risk.
And here’s the CT — there has recently been an interesting change to details in the body of the messages. Having been a designer, architect and programmer of a number of commercial systems, I became attuned to small details that could reveal changes to the inner working of systems. In the past, messages would say STOP to END. Then we got the cutesy Stop2End. Both will result in the message “You have been unsubscribed” or similar message. But now, many of the messages I get say END2END or Quit2QUIT or QUIT2END. None of these have any effect whatsoever. Here is an image of (to me) an obscure group — Defeat Extremists — with the END2END message. I don’t know how effective replying “stop” actually means. The schlock parties that send these messages can always change numbers, or for that matter, create another organization or PAC.
Anyway, I thought I would mention this as it is new, often applies to obscure groups, and of course, does not stop the messaging. Anyone else find this strange? I’m heading up to Portland OR to check out the riots — be back in a few hours to check the responses. That is if the diary doesn’t disappear.
