Google is encouraging Android phone users to switch from SMS messaging to its new and upgraded RCS messaging protocol. RCS (Rich Communication Services) messaging, used by the Google Messages app, offers a better communication experience compared to traditional SMS or MMS messaging. The protocol allows users to send high-resolution images, videos, GIFs, and a variety of file types in addition to text-based messages. It also supports read receipts and typing indicators. RCS messaging now comes with improved end-to-end encryption for enhanced privacy.
Although RCS offers features similar to messaging apps like WhatsApp or iMessage, it is a messaging protocol rather than a messaging service. As of now, RCS messaging is only available through the Google Messages app on Android devices such as Google Pixel 7 and Samsung Galaxy S23.
To use RCS messaging, users need to have the Google Messages app and be in a supported region. The app can be downloaded for free from the Play Store. However, Apple has shown no interest in adopting RCS, as iMessage already offers similar features and is owned by Apple. Google has attempted to bring Apple and iMessage to RCS but without success, as Apple prefers to maintain control over its platform.
RCS messaging is now the default option for Google Messages users, but users can manually turn it off in the app settings. If RCS is turned off or the user does not have a strong Wi-Fi or data connection, SMS can still be used as an alternative. RCS messages typically use mobile data unless connected to a Wi-Fi network, so users need to be aware of their data limits and whether RCS messages count against their allowances.
With the growing popularity of RCS, it is projected that approximately half of all phones will be using RCS by 2026.
