Since last March, the Madrid City Council has been operating an SMS alert service to help prevent fines in the SER zone.
The Madrid City Council is now sending SMS alerts to drivers who sign up for the Traffic Violation Alert System. The service, which has been active since March 27, notifies users of certain violations detected in the SER, loading and unloading zones, and unauthorized access to the Centro District and Plaza Elíptica before the formal fine notice is issued.
The service covers violations related to the SER(Madrid’s regulated parking system) and the ZBE (Environmental Restriction Zones), where cameras monitor the license plates of vehicles traveling through or entering areas with environmental restrictions.
Low-emission zones are primarily monitored by license plate recognition cameras. In Madrid, driving without authorization in a ZBE or in special protection zones can constitute a serious violation carrying a fine of 200 euros, reduced to 100 euros if paid within the early payment period.
The general ZBE covers the entire municipal area, while Distrito Centro and Plaza Elíptica have stricter regulations. Access conditions depend on the type of vehicle, its environmental sticker, registration status, payment of vehicle tax, and the destination of the trip in certain cases.
The SMS system is intended to prevent drivers from discovering weeks later that they have entered a restricted zone. However, the alert alone does not authorize driving in the area nor does it constitute a permit. Permits, invitations, or access conditions established by the ordinance in each specific case will continue to be required.
Registration is handled on Madrid.es, under “Gestiones y trámites” and “Mi Carpeta Ciudadana,” via the link for the Traffic Violation Alert System. In-person assistance is also available by appointment at the specialized SER and ZBEDEP office.
The introduction of a municipal mobile text messaging system requires extreme caution regarding potential scams. Neither the DGT nor government agencies should ever request payment of a fine directly through a link received via SMS. Cybercriminals frequently use fake messages to mimic official notifications and redirect users to websites designed to steal banking information.
A genuine SMS alert should not require immediate payment, ask for personal information, or include suspicious links. If you have any doubts, it is recommended that you go directly to the Madrid City Council’s official website or the corresponding municipal app, without clicking on links from unsolicited messages.
