The Police Department warned citizens about fraudulent SMS messages and urged them not to respond to them and not to take the actions requested in those messages.
The Police Directorate said that in the past few days, there has been a frequent sending of fraudulent SMS messages to citizens of Montenegro.
They advised citizens not to respond to the messages and not to take any actions requested of them in those messages, including sharing personal information.
According to police, these fraudulent messages contain a malicious phishing link, along with a notification that the recipient of the message will allegedly have their account terminated if they do not update their personal information.
“If you receive this or a similar message, do not enter any type of personal information, either via SMS or any other communication application,” the police said.
They stated that this is an example of a phishing attack or scam where the sender attempts to deceive the citizen with the aim of giving out their username and password, bank card details or unknowingly installing malicious software on their device.
“Always pay attention to the links you visit, the files you want to download, and ignore emails and SMS messages you were not expecting, to avoid financial and material damage,” the police said.
They recalled that the protection of personal data and communications is of utmost importance, and that carelessness can lead to financial consequences and other abuses, including the misuse of personal accounts and the further distribution of fraudulent messages.
