If your ASUS ROG Phone 9 is refusing to send picture messages or group chats, it’s a frustrating roadblock. This is usually a quick fix related to your data connection or a setting that got out of whack. Let’s get your multimedia messages flowing again.

MMS doesn’t use your regular SMS plan or Wi-Fi. It requires an active mobile data connection to send anything with a photo, video, or multiple recipients. First, pull down the quick settings panel from the top of your screen and make sure the mobile data icon is lit up.
Take a glance at your signal bars, too. If you’re in a basement or a rural area with weak reception, the message might just be stuck trying to find a network. I’d start by turning mobile data off, waiting ten seconds, and turning it back on. That often kicks the connection back into gear.
The default messaging app on your ROG Phone 9 has specific settings for multimedia messages. Open the Messages app and tap the three-dot menu in the top right, then go to Settings.
Look for a section called “Multimedia messages” or “Advanced.” Inside, ensure that “Auto-download MMS” or “Auto-retrieve” is enabled. If you’re traveling, you might also need to turn on the option for “Roaming auto-retrieve,” but be mindful of potential charges.
Temporary files can sometimes get corrupted and block MMS from sending. You can clear this cache without losing any of your actual messages. Go to your phone’s main Settings > Apps > See all apps.
Find and tap on “Messages.” Then, select Storage & cache and hit Clear cache. This takes two seconds and is a great first reset step. If the problem is really stubborn, you can tap “Clear storage” or “Clear data,” but this will erase your entire message history, so only do this if you’re okay with that.
This is a very common fix. The Access Point Name (APN) tells your phone exactly how to connect to your carrier’s data and MMS services. If these details are wrong, MMS will fail. Go to Settings > Network & internet > Mobile network > Access Point Names.
You should see a list with at least one APN selected (usually your carrier’s name). Tap on it to view the details. The most critical fields for MMS are “MMSC,” “MMS proxy,” and “MMS port.” If any of these are blank or look incorrect, you’ll need the right info from your carrier.
A quick web search for “[Your Carrier] APN settings 2024” often works, or you can contact their support directly. Once you have the correct details, you can edit the existing APN or create a new one.
Before trying anything more involved, give your phone a fresh start. A standard restart can clear up minor software glitches. Just press and hold the power button until you see the power menu, then tap “Restart.”
If the phone is being particularly unresponsive, you can force a restart by pressing and holding the Power button for about 15 seconds, until you feel it vibrate and see the ROG logo appear. This is different from a normal restart and can resolve deeper hiccups.
Running an old version of Android or the ROG software can lead to compatibility issues with your carrier’s MMS services. ASUS regularly releases updates that include connectivity improvements.
Check for updates by going to Settings > System > System update. Tap “Check for update” and install anything that’s available. Your phone will restart as part of the process, which combines two fixes in one.
If you’re still stuck, resetting network settings is a powerful step. This will erase all your saved Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth pairings, and cellular settings (including APNs), returning them to factory defaults.
It won’t delete your personal data like photos or apps. Go to Settings > System > Reset options. Tap on Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth and confirm. After the phone resets, you’ll need to re-enter your Wi-Fi passwords and re-pair Bluetooth devices, but it often clears up persistent MMS woes.
Sometimes the problem isn’t on your end at all. Your carrier might be experiencing a local network outage that’s affecting MMS. It’s worth giving them a quick call or checking their service status page online.
Also, if you recently switched to the ROG Phone 9 from another device, double-check that your line is properly provisioned for MMS on their network. A quick call to customer service can confirm this in minutes.
Your ROG Phone 9 needs a little free space to process and temporarily store MMS messages before sending them. If your storage is critically full, it can cause failures. Open Settings > Storage to see how much space you have left.
Try to clear out a few gigabytes if you’re below 10% free space. You can start by clearing old downloads, app caches, or moving photos to the cloud. This isn’t always the culprit, but it’s an easy thing to rule out.
If the stock ASUS messaging app continues to have issues, switching to a different app like Google Messages can be a great workaround. It’s a very reliable app that’s often updated directly by Google.
Download Google Messages from the Play Store. Once installed, open it and it will usually prompt you to set it as the default. If not, you can set it manually in Settings > Apps > Default apps. Send a test picture message to see if the problem was app-specific.
