Phony DMV text messages circulating – The Cordova Times

State authorities are warning the public about fraudulent text messages threatening Alaskans with serious consequences if they don’t pay outstanding vehicle fines.
These scam texts are in no way connected to the Alaska Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and should be disregarded, the Alaska Department of Administration said last week.
The Alaska DMV does not ask for payments or sensitive personal information via text message. Residents are advised to avoid responding to or sending money in response to these fraudulent messages.
“The state of Alaska is aware of the situation and is actively monitoring it to protect residents from such deceptive practices, so do not respond or engage with the unknown party sending these texts,” according to state officials.
These fraudulent text messages warn that if payment is not received by June 3 that the violation will be put into the DMV violation database, the resident’s vehicle registration will be suspended, driving privileges would also suspended for 30 days, the individual may be prosecuted, and their credit score affected. Many of the scam texts falsely advise people to go to a website to immediately pay a fine.
State officials said they have received numerous phone calls and emails about these texts. They are urging Alaskans not to respond to these messages.
