The Anchorage Police Department has noticed an increase in text message scams. The scam pretends to be from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and threatens to send a “final notice” to potential victims. The scam claims that if you do not pay fines immediately by clicking a fake link, your driving privileges will be suspended.
This DMV scam is part of a rise in “smishing” (SMS phishing) activity. These messages trick people into clicking harmful links to pay fines, replying with “Y,” entering links in their browsers, or sharing personal information. The goal is to steal your personal and financial information.
If you get a text message pretending to be from the DMV or any other state agency that demands money, remember:
Do not respond to the text or click on any links. State DMVs will not ask for your information or money through texts.
Contact your state’s DMV using a trusted phone number or official website to comfirm information.
