When a photo or video message gets stuck on your iPhone 17 with a “Tap to Download” prompt that doesn’t work, it’s usually a quick fix. MMS messages rely on your cellular data connection, and a simple setting or temporary glitch is often the culprit.

Let’s start with the most common solution that fixes this for most people.
Go to Settings > Cellular and tap the switch next to Cellular Data to turn it off. Wait about ten seconds, then tap it again to turn it back on. This refreshes your connection to the carrier’s network, which is what MMS uses to download.
After doing this, go back to the Messages app and tap the download prompt again. I’ve found this instantly resolves the issue more often than not.
If toggling data didn’t work, your iPhone might be set to only use data for certain things. You need to make sure MMS messaging is explicitly enabled.
Open Settings and go to Cellular. Scroll down to find the Messages app in the list and make sure the toggle next to it is green and on. This allows Messages to use your cellular data.
Next, go to Settings > Messages. Scroll down and ensure MMS Messaging is turned on. Also, check that Send as SMS is off, as having it on can sometimes interfere with MMS downloads.
A soft reset can clear out any minor software bugs affecting the Messages app or network services. For the iPhone 17, press and quickly release the Volume Up button, then press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Finally, press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo appear, then release.
This doesn’t erase any data, it just gives the system a fresh start. Once it boots back up, try downloading the message again.
Carrier updates are small files that help your iPhone 17 work better with your specific network, including MMS. These often install automatically, but it’s worth checking manually.
Make sure you’re connected to Wi-Fi and have a cellular signal. Then, go to Settings > General > About. If an update is available, a prompt will appear on this screen. Just follow the instructions to install it.
This is a more thorough step that clears all your saved network information, including Wi-Fi passwords, VPN settings, and cellular preferences. It’s very effective for persistent MMS issues.
Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone. Tap Reset and then choose Reset Network Settings. You’ll need to enter your passcode and confirm. Your iPhone will restart, and you’ll have to rejoin Wi-Fi networks afterward, but your messages and data will be safe.
Since you’re on iOS 26, Apple is still refining the software. A bug in a specific version could be causing MMS problems for some users. Installing the latest update often includes fixes for these kinds of issues.
Go to Settings > General > Software Update. If an update is available, tap Download and Install. It’s best to do this while connected to Wi-Fi and plugged into power.
Screen Time restrictions can sometimes block certain data functions. It’s worth a quick look to make sure nothing is inadvertently turned off.
Open Settings and tap Screen Time. Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions and enter your Screen Time passcode if prompted. Scroll down and tap Allowed Apps. Make sure the switch for Messages is enabled (green).
If you’ve tried everything here and MMS still won’t download, the issue might be on your carrier’s end. They can check if there’s a service outage in your area or if there’s a problem with your account provisioning for multimedia messages.
They can also verify that your APN (Access Point Name) settings are correct for your iPhone 17 and plan. You can usually find the correct APN details on your carrier’s support website, or they can send them to you via a text message that auto-configures your phone.
