Viewer's experience with scam text message highlights dangers of responding to fraudulent claims – WGAL

A viewer recently encountered a scam text message claiming his Apple ID triggered a security notification after a $144 charge attempt at an Apple Store in California, prompting him to call a provided phone number.
Upon calling the number, he was informed, “I had three transactions in the Cayman Islands, Russia and California using my Apple ID. They needed to connect their Apple server to my account to get my refund for the transaction. I was told to go to an email address ending with gmail.com, and I disconnected,” he said.
Scammers often use Gmail addresses because they are difficult to trace, which is what convinced the viewer that the text was a scam
After receiving messages claiming unauthorized charges, calling the provided number can lead to scammers convincing you to grant them access to your computer and bank account, resulting in financial loss instead of a refund.
