The UK’s 2G and 3G mobile networks are being phased out over the next decade, affecting millions of connected devices, including smart meter communication hubs. In this article, SMS outlines the current 2G and 3G switch-off timeline, why reliable connectivity is essential for smart meters, and how we are preparing to help customers maintain seamless data collection through upgraded connectivity solutions.
All UK mobile network operators are retiring their legacy 2G and 3G services by the end of 2033, with the 3G network shutdown already well underway across the country. The change is part of a national programme to modernise mobile infrastructure and make way for faster, more efficient 4G and 5G connectivity.
3G networks are scheduled to close by the end of 2025, with EE and Vodafone having already completed most switch-offs and Three UK and Virgin Media O2 following later this year. 2G networks in the UK will remain in limited use for essential and IoT services until 2033 at the latest, when all operators will have completed the final shutdown.
For smart meters, this phase-out matters because many existing communication hubs still rely on 2G or 3G networks to send data. As these networks are retired, older devices will need upgraded modules to stay connected and continue sharing accurate consumption information. Maintaining that connection is key to ensuring smart meters keep doing their job, recording energy use automatically, supporting accurate billing, and enabling the UK’s wider move to Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS).
Accurate, continuous data is essential for MHHS, the industry-wide reform that will see all electricity usage settled on a half-hourly basis by 2026. Devices connected via older networks risk losing connectivity once local 2G or 3G coverage is withdrawn.
To address this, SMS is working closely with partners to deliver future-proofed communication solutions that operate over 4G and beyond. Upgraded hubs allow smart meters to continue transmitting data securely and consistently, supporting accurate billing and clear energy insights for consumers and suppliers.
As one of the UK’s largest smart metering and data service providers with full end-to-end qualification across Data and Metering services, SMS has extensive experience managing connectivity at scale. The business is supporting suppliers through a phased upgrade programme that aligns with network operators’ retirement schedules.
By combining nationwide engineering capability with advanced data and metering platforms, SMS helps ensure customers remain compliant with MHHS and prepared for a fully digital energy system. This coordinated approach reduces disruption, maintains data quality, and ensures that energy information continues to flow smoothly as networks evolve.
The 2G/3G sunset marks another step forward in modernising the UK’s digital infrastructure.
For consumers, it means their smart meters will benefit from faster, more reliable communication technology that supports a fairer, more flexible energy system. For SMS, it reinforces our commitment to enabling smarter, more sustainable systems that keep people and businesses connected to the UK’s low-carbon future.
Find out how SMS can help you prepare for the 2G/3G sunset.
