Airtel’s AI-powered Spam Alert Service Flags 205 million SMS – Business Post Nigeria

Over 205 million Short Message Service (SMS) have been flagged by the pioneering Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered spam detection service of Airtel Africa Plc since its launch in March 2025.
The Airtel Spam Alert service is operational in 13 of the 14 markets of the leading telecommunications service provider in Africa.
The Spam Alert Service, which is available to all subscribers at no cost, identifies and prefixes the SMS with SPAM Alert and provides real-time updates with the immediate impact being the elimination of the need to download additional applications to manage spam.
The company said since its launch about six months ago, there has been a 12 per cent reduction in spam messages, with Nigeria recording the highest drop of 84 per cent.
The service is available to Airtel subscribers in Nigeria, Kenya, Zambia, Uganda, Gabon, Congo Brazzaville, Malawi, Madagascar, DRC, Rwanda, Tanzania, Chad and Niger, with Seychelles joining soon.
During the period under review, Kenya recorded the highest spam volume with 68 million messages flagged followed by Tanzania and Zambia with 47 million and 33 million, respectively.
Airtel Africa’s Spam Alert service uses AI to analyse and classify SMS messages as SPAM ALERT based on various parameters, including the sender's usage patterns and SMS frequency in real time.

The battery life of the Ray-Ban Meta AI eyeglass has been doubled, offering about eight hours of mixed use, a statement from Meta said.
Also, the company has improved the video quality of the smart fashion piece, allowing it to do ultra HD 3K video recording, more than double the previous number of pixels.
Meta disclosed in a notice that this would allow for sharper, smoother, and vivid content capture.
It noted that these features would be enjoyed by users of the existing Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta HSTN glasses through a software update.
“We’re enhancing live AI. As we make battery and energy efficiency optimizations, Meta AI will transition from something you prompt with a wake word to an always-available assistant. While all-day AI is a technical challenge we’re heads-down focusing on, you can currently use live AI for an hour or two.
“We’re introducing three new limited-time-only seasonal colours and a limited-edition Wayfarer Matte Transparent frame with two lens colour options to better match your personal style,” it said.
Meta said it designed the AI glasses with three core values in mind: they should be light, feel comfortable, and look great; give users powerful tools when they want them that fade into the background when you don’t; and engineered to get better over time.
