New Delhi, September 8, 2025 – The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has addressed recent media reports suggesting that it rejected a political party’s application to send SMS messages to its workers in Maharashtra as part of a campaign.
TRAI has categorically denied any involvement in approving or rejecting individual SMS campaigns. Such functions are exclusively handled by Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) under the framework of the Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations (TCCCPR), 2018.
The authority emphasized that it does not participate in the acceptance or rejection of SMS message templates and has no role in the specific instance referenced by the media.
TRAI reiterated that all decisions regarding individual SMS campaigns are the responsibility of TSPs, ensuring compliance with the existing regulatory framework.
