An APK teardown of the Google app version 16.25.44 shows that Google is adding RCS support for Gemini. Google Gemini on Android is currently limited to sending plain text messages through the Google Messages app, which uses SMS. When users try to send images generated by Gemini, the result is a blank URL, as the assistant does not yet support multimedia messaging, as reported by Android Authority.
This limitation has been confirmed on Google’s support pages, which also state that Gemini cannot read or summarize messages, create or send message group chats, add or read images, GIFs, or memes, or interact with audio and video content in messages.
New code snippets show that Gemini will check if both the sender’s and the recipient’s devices support RCS. If RCS is available, Gemini will be able to send messages with images and other media through Google Messages. If RCS is unavailable, the assistant will revert to sending standard SMS messages.
RCS also includes end-to-end encryption, depending on the recipient’s device and platform.
However, Gemini’s messaging functions remain limited to plain text for the general public. Google has not announced a timeline for when RCS support will be available, but the presence of related code in the latest app version could mean that the feature might be on its way, but you can never be too sure.
Users must ensure RCS chat is enabled in their Google Messages settings.
