Confirmed – The Social Security Administration will send you text messages to alert you to important changes to your account
Do you tend to forget things? Well, don’t worry about it. The Social Security Administration (SSA) is taking care of it. Now, they are using a new system which sends you a text message to notify you about the benefits you have applied for. Isn’t this so helpful? I mean, these processes are so important that every help you receive during the process is welcomed. So, let’s find out more about this new tool the Social Security Administration is giving us.
I know you want to know about the text messages thing, but it’s important to know the many possibilities you have to obtain economic help. Basically, the Social Security Administration is a department of the U.S. government in charge of benefit programs for American citizens. The main three benefits you can apply are: Social Security in Retirement, Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income.
Many citizens depend on these benefits to live a decent life every month. So, now you know what you can apply for if you belong to any of these categories.
This year the SSA is adding new changes to be more digitized. One of these changes is that, from May of this year, you will be receiving text messages from the Social Security Administration, to improve its communication system with citizens who have applied for the benefits. It is a more modern way to send information rather than through mail or e-mail, which are way slower to arrive and it can be lost on the way.
These notifications will be sent only to people who need to modify something about their personal account (personal information, address, bank account, etc), changes on your benefits (beginning or rejection of benefits), add documents and suspicious activities (identity theft, fraud or even attempts to log into your account).
First of all, you need to have a my Social Security account, you don’t need to pay for it, so you can create one in case you don’t have it. Once you are in, you access ‘Security Settings’ and add your phone number. Then, you accept the option of receiving notifications by SMS – or even e-mail. The final and important step is to save the changes and… there you go! You are officially receiving messages from the SSA.
If you are not very into this new notifications thing, that’s alright! You just need to follow the same steps, but instead of accepting notifications by SMS, you reject it and you will receive them by e-mail or mail, as you like.
This is not only a faster way to send important notifications, but also it is better for specific people who have difficulties when it comes to not checking their emails all the time, disabled people who cannot go to offices or people who find it so difficult to fully understand those long letters with complex concepts.
So, now you will receive the information right when the Social Security workers know your situation and you will be able to solve or modify it much faster in case you need it. This will become a positive aspect that beneficiaries from the Social Security Administration will appreciate.
Don’t be afraid of changes, some of them are thought to improve our lives. Technology is getting more important in our daily lives, so we better get used to them as soon as possible. However, this change is optional, so if you try it and you don’t like it, it’s okay! You just reject that option and you will continue to receive notifications as you used to. Are you willing to try it?
