Text claims you have unpaid traffic ticket. Is it real? – WGAL

News 8 On Your Side has told you many times about Pennsylvania Turnpike text message scams that threaten people over the claim of unpaid tolls.
Now scammers are using PennDOT to threaten drivers with similar text messages to pay a fine they don’t owe.
One big red flag is the address the text message originates from – it has nothing to do with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
The message states that as of today, you still have an outstanding traffic ticket. If you don’t pay it, you’ll be reported to the DMV. Your vehicle registration will be suspended, and your driving privileges will be suspended for 30 days.
There is also a new twist to this scam. It includes what seems like a threat to transfer the charges to a toll booth and charge a 35% service fee.
There is a link to click on to make a payment. That link has already been disabled and flagged as a scam website.
News 8 On Your Side has heard about this scam message from several viewers.
