Here’s what we know.
P.O.V: You’re texting your crush to see if they’d want to hang out after school, and they hit you back with "Sure, see you later x." You instantly feel butterflies because they agreed to spend some time with you, but then feel a wave of confusion because of the random "x" they included at the end of their message. What does "x" mean in text, and is it a good thing?
There are so many abbreviations and trending words we send in texts every day, and it can be hard to keep up with new ones as they pop up. Here’s what we know about "x," what it means, and how it’s used in text messages.
Before you freak out over receiving an "x" via text, just know that it’s a good thing. It’s usually included at the end of a message and means kisses. If you’ve ever seen someone write "XOXO," which means kisses and hugs, then you might already be familiar with the text symbol. The singular "x" is a sweet sign-off, like "sincerely" or "with love," and it can also be seen as the written equivalent of the kissy face (😘) emoji.
While "x" can definitely be used in a flirty context (especially if there are multiple, like "xx" or "xxx"), it doesn’t always mean the person sending it is into you. "X" can also be used in a friendly, warm, and non-romantic way. Ahead, we break down the meaning of the "kisses" symbol with two separate examples of how to use it.
A: Hey, want to watch a movie this weekend?
B: I’d love to. Would you want to grab dinner before?
A: Already made a reservation for 7… I’ll send deets later. See you then x
A: Thanks for helping me with the chem homework! I was seriously lost.
B: No prob, happy to help x
So, "x" could be used when flirting or when you just want to send a sweet and friendly sign-off. Just be careful who you use it with — the last thing you want to do is give someone the wrong idea if you’re not crushing on them, too.
