York County sheriff warns about toll scams sent via text message – York News-Times

York County Sheriff Paul Vrbka says his office has received calls from individuals who received texts saying they owe tolls accrued in other states.
York County Sheriff Paul Vrbka is warning the public about increasing scams involving text messages indicating someone owes toll fines in other states.
He said the Sheriff’s Office has received calls from individuals who received texts saying they owe tolls accrued while they were traveling in other states.
“Most people are confused, and if they have been traveling in another state, they might think it’s real,” Vrbka said. “Others know it’s not real because, as one elderly woman told me, she hadn’t been in Texas for 45 years.”
If a motorist has been driving in a state with toll roads and might legitimately owe money, the notice will not be sent via a text message, Vrbka said. It will come in the mail and will likely include a photo of the vehicle and license plate.
“If they do get a letter with photos, take a good, close look at it to make sure it really is your vehicle,” Vrbka said. “We had a lady bring in the photo sent to her of her license plate, but we noticed it was not real because her license plate has a handicapped sign on it, and the photo someone sent her did not have that on the license plate.”
If a motorist receives such a message and has questions, he said, they should contact the Sheriff’s Office or York Police Department. Vrbka advised against making any payments unless the motorist is sure the request is legitimate, and if it comes via text, he said, don’t respond.
