GREENSBORO, N.C. — This warning is for everyone out there. Folks are getting a text message that looks like it’s from the IRS. It says:
You are eligible to receive a $1,400 Economic Impact Payment. Please provide your accurate personal information and we will deposit the amount into your bank account or mail a paper check within 1 to 2 business days.
There’s a link as well. The text isn’t real, but here’s the problem, people are getting Economic Impact Payments from the IRS. Those payments are automatic. Taxpayers don’t have to do anything to get them.
That real scenario prompted scammers to start sending fake emails and texts.
“The IRS will not ever contact you via an email or especially via text to say, hey, look, give us your information so we can verify you. The IRS is just not gonna do that. It’s gonna come in a letter,” said Ryan Dodson, Stanaland, Dodson & Associates, LLP.
Nothing with the IRS happens fast. If something is wrong with your taxes, or your refund, you are going to get letter, after letter after letter about it. It is a slow process.
If you get a call, a text, or an email that says you need to act fast or else…it’s a scam.
DID YOU KNOW?
You need to look carefully at the links that are sent to you. In this case, the link was irs.gov-verify.com. The part you want to pay close attention to is gov-verify.com. ANYTIME the domain name is separated from the .com, there is a problem. It should be irs.gov.com. There can be information AFTER the .com, but not before.
