SMS and calls are a thing of the past! People are switching to messengerand data consumption is skyrocketing – Letem světem Applem

Czechs are using their mobile phones less and less for traditional calls or SMS messages. On the contrary, mobile data consumption is growing significantly. This is according to data from the virtual operator Tesco Mobile.
Mobile phone usersoneare consuming many times more data than they did five or ten years ago. The increase is truly enormous, for example, in the Tesco Mobile network, each user currently transfers forty times more data on average than seven years ago. In 2018, the average mobile phone owner consumed 120 MB data per month, five years ago it was 360 MBThis year, the average monthly consumption per customer is 4MB.
“The fundamental turning point came in 2023 with the deployment of 5G networks. Faster connections led to a dramatic increase in data consumption, and at the same time we began to increase the volumes of basic data packages,” said Michal Matějičný, CFO of Tesco Mobile Czech Republic.
In practice, 5G speeds typically hover around 500 Mbps, allowing for smooth HD video streaming or sharing of connections between multiple devices.
On the other hand, classic text messages are on the decline. While in 2018 the average user sent 38 SMS, today it’s just 12 Text communication has moved to applications like WhatsApp and Messenger.
The average length of voice calls is also gradually decreasing. In the Tesco Mobile network, it currently reaches per month for one SIM card, in 2018 it was 76 minutes.
“It doesn’t mean that people are making fewer phone calls. They are just using other communication channels, which is also reflected in a decrease in the number of SMS. Some customers are then able to make do with a large data package and communicate only using messenger” added Michal Matějičný.
In 2024, according to data from the Czech Statistical Office, 81 percent of Czechs over the age of 16 used a smartphone. Among people under 64, the share is over 95%, while among seniors over 75, it is only around 24%. While the market is almost saturated among younger generations, further increases are expected mainly among older age groups.
Tesco Mobile is the largest Czech virtual operator with almost 200 thousand active customers. It is also the number one among virtual operators in other countries where it operates – in the UK it has more than 5,4 million customers, in Ireland 450 thousand and in Slovakia 300 thousand.
