NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Several law enforcement agencies from across the state are warning Tennesseans about a swathe of scam text messages that have been recently popping up on people’s phones.
The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security (TDOSHS), the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP), and multiple other law enforcement agencies warned about scam text messages that say they’re coming from the state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
TDOSHS said the messages claim the recipient has outstanding traffic tickets and threatens their car registration and driver’s license status if the fines are not paid. They said some of the messages will include a link to a fake website that’s meant to look like the actual TDOSHS site.
“These messages do not come from the TDOSHS or the THP,” the department said. “They are fake messages trying to scam Tennesseans.”
This scam is the latest in a series of scams calls and texts throughout the state, including the “unpaid toll road fees” scam and messages from supposedly trusted sources.
The TDOSHS said there are a few steps Tennesseans can take to protect themselves:
TDOSHS said if you’ve been a victim of one of these scams, you can report it to the Internet Crime Complaint Center.
