JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Alarming text messages are flooding the phones of Florida drivers, warning of unpaid tolls and threatening late fees or legal action. The catch is it’s a scam.
The common theme here is that they demand immediate payment claiming to be from toll agencies.
SunPass says they want to remind customers to be careful of text messages or other communications that demand immediate payment for unpaid toll balances.
Messages often pressure customers to make a quick payment including a link to a fake website to collect personal information.
As weeks pass, more people in Jacksonville are seeing the message.
“Within the week, my husband received three text messages,” Michelle Banks told First Coast News. “All with misspellings, the last text even had the heart emoji. It’s heightening up more and more.”
Her mom also received the message.
“She asked me if it was a scam,” Banks said.
Banks is concerned because the elderly population can be more vulnerable.
“They will respond to it and send money to God knows where,” Banks added. “Their account could be in jeopardy.”
Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is aware of the scams. They told First Coast News over the weekend it’s hard to nail down who is behind the scams.
